What is a HIPPS?

HIPPS (High Integrity Pressure Protection System) are system-critical systems with valves designed to protect downstream systems from over-pressure events. They are specifically designed to react quickly in closing a pipeline or flow line. HIPPS function autonomously, operating independently of process shutdown, emergency shutdown or control systems.

How does a HIPPS? work?

A HIPPS is a system that closes the source of over-pressure within a specified time with at least the same reliability as a safety relief valve. HIPPS is a functional loop consisting of:

• Sensors/Initiators that detect the high pressure (usually 3)
• A logic solver control system, which processes the input from the sensors to quick-closings hut off valves to shut the source of over-pressure
• A valve, actuator and solenoids

What applications require HIPPS?

HIPPS prevent over-pressurisation between high-pressure and lower-pressure systems in gas, chemical and oil refinery plants and subsea applications.
