    Angle Slurry Valves

    What is a Slurry Valve?

Slurry Valves are the type of valves that have the capabilities to handle abrasive slurries in ways that other valves are not able to. Because the fluids are quite thick and filled with solids and potentially highly abrasive material, so plugging can become a problem with slurry applications in the material handling processes. Abrasive materials are known to grind system equipment and wear out internal materials that wear down or break valve seals.

How does a Slurry Valve work?

Angle Slurry Valves are specifically designed for application in industries where erosion and scaling are frequent. They have a special disc turning device designed to help grind the seats clean. They come in Angle, Bayonet and Y Globe designs.

What are the best Slurry Valves?

When looking to purchase Slurry Valves there are a few key operating requirements to look for.

    • Durability Make sure the seats have two functions, have the ability to protect the metal components within the valve and are able to keep a tight seal to prevent leakage. Natural rubber is a great material for Slurry Valves it has good longevity against abrasive slurries.
    • Temperature and Pressure Check what type of slurry is going through the application before selecting a Slurry Valve. Slurries may require heat and/or high temperatures for long-distance transport. The temperature and pressure of the slurry itself will impact on which elastomers and materials are required in the valve for the process.
    • Full Opening You can minimise the wear of the valve to the slurry with a full pipeline opening (or a full port).
    • Positive Shut Off This means the valve has a stem that will drive the disc against the seat (unlike a diaphragm valve which often leaks if there is a loss in pressure). Positive shut off valves require manual turning of the stem to open and close.
    • Materials Because of the highly abrasive and potential corrosive nature of slurries, it’s extremely important that the right materials are chosen for the application. Hard-facing materials such as Stellite which is made from cobalt-chromium alloys are perfect for their high wear resistance properties.
    • Draining Slurries often need to be flushed out of a valve to prevent build up, therefore a self-draining feature will help minimise maintenance downtimes.

Do you require assistance to buy the right Slurry Valve for your business? What are typical uses of Slurry Valves?

Slurry Valves are used in heavy industrial applications such as the mining industry where highly abrasive materials are processed through valves. They are required to operate under extreme conditions and are some of the most challenging materials to pump.

How long does a Slurry Valve last?

Angle Slurry Valves, like many other types of valves, both require regular servicing and maintenance if you want to extend their service life. There are a few different types and sizes of Slurry Valves available so it’s best to get in touch with a valve specialist so you can ensure you are getting the right product for your application. For more information on what type of Slurry Valve you require and tips on how to maintain your valves, contact a Winnellie Valves and Process expert today.
