    FAQs

    What is a Solenoid Valve?

A Solenoid Valve is an electronically controlled valve that features a solenoid – an electric coil with a moveable ferromagnetic core or plunger and a valve body. The purpose of the solenoid is to turn electrical energy into movement.

How does a Solenoid Valve work?

Solenoid valves are valves that are operated by an electrical input for a mechanical push-pull action. Solenoid valves operate using a linear sliding obstructer that opens and closes the valve or changes the flow from one outlet to another. There are many different types of obstructions used including plunger, shuttle, spool, and diaphragm.

What are typical uses of a Solenoid Valve?

Solenoid Valves are useful in fluid power hydraulic and pneumatic applications to control cylinders, fluid power motors and larger industrial valves. They are commonly used in the automotive industry, natural gas installations, appliances such as dishwashers and a range of heavy industry applications.

To buy the right Solenoid Valve for your application, contact one of our valve experts today.

How do you install Solenoid Valves?

Before starting any valve installation, check that the type of Solenoid Valve you are using is the right one for the application. There will be a type label on the valve itself so you can check the valve properties. Solenoid Valves are predominantly used to direct, start or stop the fluid flow from a supply pipe to a piece of equipment. One port of the solenoid valve is connected to the main supply line that carries the fluid and the other port can be connected to the device or outlet pipe.

Make sure you install the valve in a dry and ventilated environment as the valve gets hot during use. The best way to install the Solenoid Valve is with the coil facing upward and about 90 degrees from the valve body. This reduces the risk of media sediments falling into the tube.

Next, mount the coil on the Solenoid Valve and tighten the nut enough so that the coil doesn’t vibrate or rotate during use. Then, install the connector to your power supply while making sure the valve connection has the same form size.

Turn on the power supply and you’re done. If you feel the Solenoid Valve isn’t working properly check for the following causes: blocked valve, wrong flow direction, low differential pressure and water hammer.

How do I Replace a Solenoid Coil?

Solenoid coils are usually the first things that need to be replaced in a Solenoid Valve. Follow these steps to replace a solenoid coil:

    • Make sure you disconnect the supply wires and grounding from the coil
    • Remove the retaining clip to slide out the coil from the core tube assembly
    • Install the new solenoid coil in its place and replace the retaining clip
    • Reconnect the electrical connections to the coil

Remember, it’s always best to have a qualified technician install your valves for industrial applications. However, if you want to be able to install a Solenoid Valve yourself, contact a valve expert to guide you through the process. Winnellie Valves and Process also provide valve training courses for all types of valves.
